Amid a severe heatwave, Delhi’s peak power demand crossed 8000 megawatts (MW) on Wednesday– the highest in the history of the national capital. On Tuesday afternoon, the demand had surged to an all-time high of 7717 MW, according to officials.
Delhi’s previous all-time high peak power demand was recorded at 7,695 MW on June 29, 2022, according to officials.
The national capital is reeling under intense heat with a steady temperature rise. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heat wave conditions in many parts of Delhi and severe heatwave conditions in some areas.
It has also issued a red alert for the next four days. According to the seven-day forecast, the maximum temperature will be in the range of 44 to 47 degrees Celsius.
Earlier today, Delhi minister and AAP leader Atishi during a press conference said, “Despite the peak power demand crossing over 7000 megawatts, Delhi has managed to supply 24 24-hour electricity. Yesterday, the temperature reached 48 degrees. The Kejriwal government made sure that there were no power cuts and load shedding.”
Atishi further said that the government and the Discoms are ready to meet the demand.
